Why would someone use a shotgun for hunting?

wont it randomly fill the animal with metal that you might eat and break a tooth? Why would someone use a shotgun for hunting?
Well, if you use shot, you dig it out. If you shoto it with slugs, then it should be in the vitals and you dont eat it. It depends on what kind of animal you are hunting and the states regulations to what gun is avalible. Some so hunt squirrels and rabbits with shotguns, but it is much easier to shoot em with a .22 and then you dont have to dig out pellets. Why would someone use a shotgun for hunting?
Every state has regulations as to which type of firearm is legal. Due to the fact that a rifle bullet can and will travel a lot father than a shotgun slug, it is reasonable to assume in congested areas that a shotgun is ';safer'; than a rifle. Flying game is very difficult to take down with a rifle. Depending on your choice or ammunition, there is not necessarily more damage. For instance steel shot is more likely to pass through the animal/meat than lead.

When hunting small game aka: rabbits, squirrels. a shotgun can be much more effective in leafy vegetation, whereas a single projectile could be easily deflected.
they use slugs not the shells filled with BBs when hunting deer

Its hard to hit a bird with a slug though
Slugs are single solid projectiles that can be used in shotguns for hunting. They won't spray lead all over the animal. Shotguns are cheaper than rifles and more versatile. You can load a shotgun with slugs and hunt elk and load the same gun with birdshot and shoot sparrows. They are much more versatile guns and the route that many go who don't have a lot of money to spend.
It depends on what size ammo your using in your shotgun and how far away you are when you shoot it... but hunting is not just about the meat... skins and feathers can be used or sold too.

Shotguns are great for duck hunting... I once shot at a flock of ducks in the air flying at pace and collected 3 ducks from that one shot!!
You usually blast a wild turkey in the head with the shotgun. Since we've never eaten the head, we don't worry about it.

Remember, shotguns can use slugs as well.
Its also kind of hard to hit a bird in the air without one.
Apparrently you've never been hunting..

When you clean the animal, then you dig the BB's out.
you ever tried to hit a duck or quail with a rifle?? lol...you pick the shot out when you clean your game.
no you clean it and srip it of tall the bad stuff
In some cases, it's required by the state, especially for bird hunting.
shotguns are used in dense brush for taking fast moving animals. relatively short range and fast game make a shotgun worth carrying.
Bcause they're mean and ignorant
