There are many types of hunting dogs, but very few that are bear hunting dogs. Here we will take a look at information on the few bear hunting dog breeds.

The Karelian Bear Dog is a Bear Hunting Dog

The Karelian Bear Dog averages about 23 inches long and can weigh up to 50 pounds. This breed has a small appetite for the size of dog, and is not recommended for those living in small areas such as an apartment. These dogs love to be outdoors and enjoy running. These are very energetic dogs that need much exercise to keep the energy under control. This breed has small ears that point outwards, and have a dense fur of short hair.

This bear hunting dog has a very distinctive black and white coat that is much unlike the cousin of this breed, the Spitz. Black speckles in the fur are considered to be a fault, because these dogs are primarily black with white marks on the head and neck as well as the chest and legs. A long tail and small eyes are common in this breed, with a robust appearance. This dog is considered very loyal to owner and family, but is not for the casual pet owner because the dog is a hunter and will put a bear into flight or fight mode upon appearance. Any outdoors person or those with dedicated hunting times would love this breed, and those owners should use proper training to control this animal. These dogs are bred to hunt bear, and they are willing to fight any animal therefore training and complete control is required of owners.

Bloodhounds %26amp; Other Scent Hounds are great Bear Hunting Dogs

Bloodhounds are well known for their uncanny talent for sniffing out any animal or human which can make them great bear hunting dogs. Bloodhounds have been used for centuries during hunts to help humans find their prey. All scent hounds are heavier dogs with deep chests and are known for their endurance and not speed. These dogs are known to have low voices when barking, and are also known to chase or corner their prey and alert the hunter to the game.

Bassets, coonhounds, foxhounds and even Scottish deerhounds are all great bear hunting dogs due to their scent capabilities. Each of these dogs requires training and control, as these dogs are known to fight in a hunting situation. It is best if the owners are very well versed in control of their dog, and not for new pet owners by any means if they are to be used for hunting. Without proper training and control, your dog could end up dying in a fight needlessly.

I wouldn't advise you to make a dog take down a bear, that could kill the dog.

I would recommend a Rhodesian Ridgeback for small animals, maybe up to foxs. They were used for hunting lions a long time again. Very smart and beautiful. What dog is strong, fast and smart? Good for hunting down quick animals, or taking something as big as a bear.?
No dogs should be attempting to take down a bear.
Wolf hound?

I wouldn't say one could take on a bear though, but wolves - obviously (usually a pack of wolf hounds)
