What kind of mixed signals? Behind any kind of training, there is the underlying quality of paying attention to your owner and learning to perform as they want and expect you to. Training a dog in hunting requires obedience so I'm not understanding how it would mean mixed signals. You can't very well a dog to be good as a hunting companion if it isn't listening can you?
Obedience school would be good for a hunting dog. Obedience trainning is good for any dog.
