Is a 20 or 22 gauge shotgun good for turkey hunting for a 13 year old boy?

A 20 gauge turkey load will work fine. Just make sure he lets the turkey get in a little closer than he would with a 12 gauge before he takes the shot. I've never heard of a 22 gauge but if it does exist I'd say it'll work too if it's offered in a turkey load. It would be so close to a 20 gauge I don't know how you'd be able to tell the difference. Is a 20 or 22 gauge shotgun good for turkey hunting for a 13 year old boy?
20 ga. is perfect as long as he can handle the kick. There is no 22 ga. shotguns. You CAN buy .22 long rifle shotshells for snakes, rats, %26amp; mice. You don't need 3'; 0r 3-1/2'; shells to start. The 2-1/2~2-3/4'; shells have killed millions of turkey over the years. Hardest part about turkey hunting is camoflageing and setting real still. Is a 20 or 22 gauge shotgun good for turkey hunting for a 13 year old boy?
Yeah, 20 gauge is good for a 13 year old to use for hunting turkeys. I havea friend who got his first turkey when he was 12, and he was using a 20 gauge.
well first theirs no such a thing as a 22 gage the gages are 10,12 16,28,20,and 410 i have heard of a 8 gage i did some research and it was a muzzle loading shot gun used back in the day as for a kid and shot gun i would use a 12 gage with a good buffer for his shoulder but i would stick with 2 3/4 shells hell i hate to shoot 3 inch mags and 3 and 1/2 forget it to much for me
I would use a 20 gauge. I was handling a 20 gauge shotgun when I was around 8 years old. Just be sure to take the boy to a hunters safety class. He needs to learn the safe operation of a gun wether it is a shotgun or rifle.
20 guage wouldn't be too hard on your boy. But one thing you should consider is how limited your choice of shot is going to be. Most sporting goods stores stock the most selection with 12 guage and .410. 20s, 16s, 10s, etc., don't sell as well, so they stock less selection.
As a 10 year old girl, I was shooting a .20 gauge; my younger brother killed his first turkey with a .20 gauge at 8 yrs. old %26amp; his 1st deer at 9 yrs old with the same gun. So to answer your question, a .20 gauge works well on turkeys.

I think you are doing the right thing by making sure your son can handle both himself and the .20 gauge before stepping it up to a .12 gauge. You'll know when he's ready. Each kid/person learns and advances at their own pace when it comes to firearms and hunting. My 9 yr old daughter is inheriting my .410 next yr, she has a .22 now, and hasn't shot much more than small game, but the smile on that kid's face just being out in the woods with her dad, granddad, cousins, and I would light up the world. Let him enjoy %26amp; Good luck!!!
A twenty will work, but he'll have to let the Tom get in close. If you can find a 22 bore, it's an antique and probably shouldn't be shot at all, but may have some collector's value.
First off a 22ga does not exist, and second, this 13 yea old sissy needs to grow a pair and start using a 12ga. 20ga are for women, my brothers and I have been shooting twelve gauges since we were 8.
I think you mean 28 gauge. The 20 would be the way to go. The 28 will cost you more up front and to shoot and really for a 13 year old a 20 should not be a problem. I was duck hunting with an over-sized 12 when I was that age and recoil was not a problem and I was on the light side. The main thing is to get a gun that fits and learn proper shooting form, most recoil problems are from poor fitting guns or because people don't now how to hold the gun properly.

Get an auto-loader (Rem 1100 for example) with a good recoil pad (buy an aftermarket if you need to - LimbSaver). Start out with light loads and learn proper shooting form. In turkey hunting you are normally sitting, practice shooting this way. Learn to relax and roll with the recoil. If you are all tight and stiff it's going to hurt.

Smaller people with proper technique can handle as much if not more recoil than large people.

My $0.02
