Is a 223 a good caliber for ground squirrel hunting?

if so how far can it shoot up 2 if im using a bolt action 223Is a 223 a good caliber for ground squirrel hunting?
a .223 would vaporize a squirrel. You want a .22lr. Though I don't know why you'd be hunting squirrel in the first place. Is a 223 a good caliber for ground squirrel hunting?
Yes the 223 is perfect for ground squirrels (they are NOT tree squirrels people)and the 223 is also perfect for coyotes and prairie dog type varmints too. They are cheaper to shoot than the 22-250 with no barrel burning and should be good as your optics out to 500 yards, just zero in 2 inches high at 100 yards and be right on at 200,makes longer shots easier. 55 grain bullets seems to be the most popular loading I've seen for standard twist barrels.
as long as you don't want any part of the critter. and as fer as how far well that depends on you, your and most importantly you scope but also wind-age , temperature and the ammo you select as every rifle throats em different. While the .223 will carry 1000 yards you would have to be 100% correct on the yardage if he's at 900 yards and you think it's a 1000 then you will miss him every time and if you rifle is sited in for those type ranges then critters from 50 yrds on out to 5 or 600 yards are perfectly same. so just site you rifle in at 3 inches high at 100 yards and that's optimal for most normal shooting situations. good 0 - around 400 yards with little under hold and over hold.
G'day mate,If your taking the meat make sure they are all head shots,I have a .223 i shoot up to 500 meters with it thats about 546 yards with a 4-16x44 scope, but i have shot a kangaroo about 750 meters thats about 820 yards. If you reload yr own ammo you can slow yr bullet down so it not so much as an over kill on the smaller game thats what i do now on rabbits, because im only shooting them at about 100 to about 250 meters.so I've slowed it down a bit.cheers mate
In my opinion that is about all that a 223 is good for. I mean heck, it's not even suitable for military use, even though our troops are forced to use it. However it might just be a little much for a squirrel. Stick with a .22. When I started hunting squirrel as a boy, I used a shotgun loaded with bird shot. I got em everytime, lol!!! I enjoyed your question, thanks!!!
Not really --- Its a bit on the big side for squirrel....

Consider a rifle chambered in .22LR or even .17 HMR....

.223 is way to much.......

.22LR ...

.17HMR......

I wouldn't consider anything else to exotic.... These 2 cartridges are common and perfect for the job.....
It's a good caliber, but 22LR should do it, a .223 is a little overkill.
squirrels.... ? ....... ..... ? ..... are you serious?

it depends if you want your squirrel in one peice or 100 peices...... lol
Sure. If you don't want to leave anything for the buzzards to eat.

Use a 22 LR or a 20 ga. shotgun. and %26lt; 35 yds.
if you plan on eating them....no but if its more of a just for fun or extermination sort of thing then yes it will work fine.
Little over kill if you ask me! But I guess if your going to shot them from a mile away its perfect!
Yes, use a 40 gr. rounds.
it can kill a man, does that answer it for you?
i think you'd be far better off with a 22. theyre slightly cheaper and i like the lightest things possible.

DONT USE A .470!!! you wont be able to find the squirrel.
Just out to 1,000 yards.
