A question about pig hunting dogs?

What breed would you recommend and why? (Pro's %26amp; Con's)

Also would an ash spear take the weight of a fully grown boar?

What i mean is if i were to have the butt of the spear wedged against a rock and a boar ran onto it, would the spear break?

Thanks to all in advance.A question about pig hunting dogs?
Best hog dogs around are Catahoulas. It is because they trace their lineage back to wolves more recently than almost any other breed. It is most accepted that their ancestry comes from red wolves in Louisiana mixing with hound-like dogs living with native tribes. The Spanish left behind mastiff like dogs (Spanish War Dog) and sight hunting dogs (Spanish Greyhound). These 2 breeds mixed with the wolf/dog mixes. THEN, the French introduced herding dogs (Beauceron), which also mixed with the others.

All of this produced a dog that had uncanny survival instincts (from the wolf), fierceness (from the war dog), hunting ability (from the greyhound), and the skills to ';read'; and work herd animals (french shepherd).

These dogs are known around the world for their ability to successfully work and hunt hogs (and cattle, horses, etc.). Where most herding breeds fail to properly work hogs is the fact that you can't ';push'; hogs. Catahoulas study the herd of hogs carefully, and usually identify the ';lead hog'; or ';boss hog';. Then they rush in, bite the hog on the heal, nose, or ear and then rush away, in the direction of the hunter. They do this repeatedly, all the while bringing the hog closer to the hunter without ';pushing'; it from behind like other herding breeds. Catahoulas do this instinctively and are one of the only breeds that can do it without getting hurt or killed.

Catahoulas are extremely dominant and must be properly socialized and trained to be a good dog. Reputable breeders of working Catahoulas regularly work their dogs in hog dog trials (mostly in the South).A question about pig hunting dogs?
A Catahoula hound will hunt boars. They are bred for it. And if you get ahold of someone that makes spears that will penetrate hide that would be a great way to hunt. You really have to watch your dogs..boars are vicious and can kill one. Also make sure you wear high boots thick ones so a boar cannot spear you. Also hunting with more than one dog is better than one one boars. The only Con I can think from using dogs on boars would be my dog getting seriously hurt...but that is where training your dogs to come to your command is so well heeded. And hunting with a spear is just so neat. And just because we do not need to hunt for food anymore does not mean we do not have the right to do it...and most of those species the other person was talking about is in other countries, and I only hunt here in the US. I feel for extinction as I love animals, and if anyone wants to read about money given to help save animals most of them are true hunters not low ball ones. Good luck on your hunting adventures.
Pit Bulls are used for hog hunting seeing how they were bred for taken down bulls they do pretty good taking down hogs. really no cons to this breed when it comes to hunting they were bred for it, their will is very strong, and they dont tire as easily as other breeds.

as for the ash spear part you should be good i would just check it out before placing it to make sure theres no cracks in it or anything like that.
we have a ridge back, bull mastiff female. she is large enough for the big ones and smart enough for a pack. she is an alfa female not just because she can be dominant, but because she knows what fight to pick. she never comes home empty handed. i personally dont like blue or red cattle dog crosses as they are just too strong willed and too quick to bite children. pit bulls are good but more as a second dog as they find it hard to think for themselves and un nutered males would rather root than hunt. cross breed dogs are good for hunting as you can find traits you like in different breeds. the thing you should be looking for is intelegence, not just size. always look at the parents and watch their temperment. treat your dog with respect and it will hunt for you. dont be a red neck looser who gives a bad name to other pig hunters, remember the rule of fences. use the gate and if it was open leave it open and if it was shut leave it shut. don't cut some poor bastard's fence to get your car through. respect the property you are hunting on. good luck. ps dont know about the spear but its something i have always wanted to try.
I really cant help you on the questions you are asking. I did feel the need to address Emily's diatribe against hunters and hunting.

You have no idea what the heck you are talking about. Humans introduced hogs into the ecosystem here. It is up to humans to control them. Hogs have wreaked HAVOC in places they never should have been.

They have ruined areas of Hawaii because Capt. Cook dropped them off there to live wild along with cattle. These introduced species ran amok. If they had not been hunted, captured etc..they would easily have taken over the islands. Creating a much different landscape than what you enjoy now.

This is also true in many states mainland where domesticated pigs escaped and went feral.

Even aside from hogs and Bullock cattle, some wildlife benefits from herd thinning to maintain self supporting herds. People granted, have done a lot to eradicate some species including some like the Tasmanian wolf, the American Bison, the Dodo and wild wolves of North America.

Thankfully we have mostly progressed beyond killing for killings sake and now conservation plays a large roll on what can be hunted. All of the hunters I grew up with ate what they killed, and used the leather etc...
The Argentine Dogo (also known as the Dogo Argentino or Argentinian Mastiff) is a large, white, game-bred, muscular dog that was developed in Argentina for big-game hunting.

Argentine Dogo are great dogs and for hunting they would be my first choice
There are catch as well as hunting dogs that enjoy this type of work..pits excell in it.

As far as spears, check out coldsteel.com they sell spears that will stop a buffalo and they have proof of them on tape.

The owner of the company is a hunter and he has taken down animals in excess of 2000 pounds with one of their spears!!
I am guessing that you are an Aussie as I found you on the Australian Page.

There are many opinions as to what a good pig hunting dog is and is suitable for Australian conditions. I have friends that hunt and everyone has their own choice of dog.

I will give you a link to an Aussie hunting site.

They have a forum and are helpful.
