I lived in California and was told by law enforcement that the gun and ammo cannot be within reach of each other. In other words if the gun is in the trunk the ammo has to be in the glove box.
In a locked case, unloaded, in the trunk of your car or some other place where it's inaccessible to the passengers.
unloaded for sure but i would check with local laws.
