My buddy here in Northern Jersey had an uncle who got chased up a tree by a black bear. Usually black bears are pretty afraid of people, right? but it is a wild animalHave you ever been chased by a Bear when hunting?
The amount of time I spend in the woods, Im bound to be charged sooner or later, and I have.
'Twas a fair Novemeber morning, I had gotten up at the crack of noon, to go deer hunting. I stepped out of my truck, put my bullets in my pocket, got the GPS and a few other things, and as I was walking into the woods, loading up my rifle, I saw the, for lack of a nonprofane word, thing. I stood, straight, without a single bullet in the chamber of my rifle, I dropped the useless piece of junk. I reached back for my hunting knife, and stood at a menacing pose. The bear ran full charge, snapping his jaws and growling to beat all.....heck. About 3 yards ahead of me, he stopped dead in his tracks, turned, and ran. I picked up my rifle, put my knife back, and headed back to the truck to head home for a change of pants.Have you ever been chased by a Bear when hunting?
Been close to black bears quite often, but no bad encounters. I have been chased by a Badger, which was a bit humbling since my whole hunting party watched an ankle-high animal made me run for the first time since Football.
I have been stalked by wolves while hunting late season whitetails. I would still-hunt to one end of the property and on my way back, found wolf prints in my tracks. (3 times in one year) Never saw the wolf, which made it very surreal, but I actually deep-down was hoping to so I could dispose of it. F the wolves.
Number one, don't run from a bear. Number two, if you choose to climb a tree, don't employ this tactic with a black bear. They are tremendous climbers. Your best bet is to stand your ground, try to look large, gradually back away, and yell at the bear. If you are not hunting, making noise as you go through the woods will allow you to avoid most bear encounters. If you are in bear country a lot, consider purchasing bear spray.
No...I have not been chased. Yes, growing up in Alaska, I have had numerous encounters. None ended in bear deaths or the use of pepper spray.
I was fishing a deadwater in Northern Maine when I was about 13. I was work my way along shore in a dark swampy area trying to find footing where I wouldn't sink up to my knees when a black bear jumped up about 15 yards ahead of me. I turned around with my heart trying to come out of my mouth and started running back down through the swamp. No danger of sinking in the bog now! I could have run across water! I looked over my shoulder and had a last glimpse of the bear running in the opposite direction twice as fast as I was. I still went another 20 or 30 yards before I stopped....and sank to my knees in muck. Freaked me out enough that I walked back to camp looking over my shoulder the whole three miles without even wetting a line.
But no, I've never been chased by a bear. This was a close as I want to come.
';chased';? no, but bothered by them? yes. I've had them walk into my camp and had to scare them off, I was bow hunting from a tree stand and had One climb right up to the bottom of my platform, I actually hit him on the nose with my bow (I had a .44mag in the other hand and was giving him one last chance!) before he scampered back down and left. I have had them follow me up trails when hiking, and try to steal a stringer of fish one time too.
shoot safe
Nope but was hunting deer in NC when the dogs brought a deer near the black bear he decided to skulk out of the woods to avoid the dogs, when he saw me he retreated to the bed of my pick up where I shot him and he dropped dead. when the others from the hunting club showed up they were amazed not that I shot the bear but that I was able to load him into the bed by myself. I let them believe that for about 45 minutes before I told them how it really happened.
Annie Oakleaf I too have been chased by a moccasin. I was fishing and was trolling slow and it made every turn I made for about a mile until I decided to stop playing with it and turned up the speed to reduce the chance of a stupid story being told about me on the news later
yes well no not while hunting but hiking I was planing to do a 2 day hike in VA and there was a general store where the hike began I got a few supplies and there were some Boy Scouts selling peanut brittle outside I hadn't had any peanut brittle in a while so I bought a tin now everyone knows better than to bring something smelly like peanut brittle on a hike and so did I but I wasn't thinking I was about a mile up the trail when I decided to tear into some peanut brittle it didn't take long to attract 3 black bears yes they do travel in threes no matter what you've heard anyway as they were up the trail I slowly began down the trail not even thinking about the peanut brittle or the 1911 I had in my backpack when they picked up the pace I began to haul a** trying to get to that 1911 when I realized they were probably after the peanut brittle so I gave it to them needless to say my hike got cut short and I now carry my gun holstered on my side anyway I went to the ranger station to report that I wasn't going on my hike and told him why he told me that black bears are the only animals in north America that will hunt people for food other animals will kill humans for territory or protection but black bears will stalk and kill people for food anyway believe it or not that's my story
So he climbed up a tree and escaped a bear and you believe him, you do know that bears will chase you up a tree they don't just leave when you climb in a tree. Just like any animal they will chase if they feel threatened. I have been stalked by a mountian lion a couple years ago when looking for deer horns that was cool, and my jackass friends just watched from the other side of the canyon.
i lost a mountain goat to a sow grizzly and two cubs 16 years ago. i shot it in the evening, cleaned it and went back to my camp. the next morning i went back to get it and the grizzlies were on it. they false charged me most of the way back to my camp. i fired 11 shots into the air and into the ground and i barely phased them. i got out in one piece but i was going to put the next shot into the closest bear. one of the scariest things i have gone through.
i have never been charged by a black bear but have gotten close and had the poop scared out of me. i did get attacked by a huge mule dear buck a few years back when i was working as a surveyor. it was right in the middle of the rut and he put his head down and tried to run me. the fellow i was working with could only watch. i finally hit it with a small boulder and it wandered off.
i live in the British Columbia Rockies. there are places i will not go with-out a rifle because of the bears.
no bears
got chased by a rapid dog out plinking once. I ran by my car, picked up the AK and cut it down in a hail of bullets. I think it got hit 15 times (out of a 30rd magazine). plinking isn't hunting. and no one hunts with an AK47. and I was really scared so I just shot until the magazine ran out. the dog was really, really dead.
It was Wolf Performance JSP 154 grain at less than 10 yards, absolutely devastating.
No I haven't.
I have walked upon a mountain lion before. I let her alone and slipped away.
It had iced the night before and was thawing off the trees making a lot of noise. she couldn't her me coming upon her. I don't think she ever knew I was there.
If you are chased by a bear you don't have to out run him just out run your friends.
I haven't been chased by a bear.. but I have been chased by a water moccasin that was about 5 1/2' long. For those who don't know, those snakes are VERY territorial.. mean ol snakes.
Also, down here in South Georgia, another snake will chase you too (I think it's the indigo snake).
Hum.. seems like I'm the only person to have been chased by something that doesn't have legs haha
My Brother and I had a brown Bear come to the kill site of a Sitka Blacktail deer while hunting on Kodiak Island. We were not chased off we just backed out before it came to that. It was actually a neat experience now that we look back, but at the time it was quite chilling!!!!!!
Yo, by a moose and a bear ,a large black bear .Long story
Several Caribou gave me a hard time and once and a caribou followed me for hours till I backtracked over a clifflike structure and tried to jump on her back, her love cooled off .I can bore you with loads more.
I'm too slow to out run one and not a good climber either...so I've bluffed a few.and back out of the area....some I just yelled and they took off....except for the one my buddy shot ..but we were hunting.
YELLOW JACKETS....now I 've run plenty from them and bald faced hornets!..hate them basterds! been stung some...happens when traveling off the troop trail!
No, but had a Badger face me down - thankful I had my little 22 pistol on me which I fired in the air which broke off the standoff - didn't want to kill the badger but not entirely sure the Badger would of been killed had I shot at it - Badger attack could be as bad or worse than a Bear.
I've run into bears on my property. One was aggressive... and that's the one I shot.
The couple of others I shot were precautionary... they were hanging around a little too much...
I don't like animals that weigh more than me, can run faster than me, and have teeth...
No not yet. I have ran into them browsing through my garbage can at night. This doesn`t happen often at all,but the few times it did the bear just took off. Your friends uncle must have startled the bear or possibly came close to her cubs.
Nope I haven't I live in north jersey to and i,ve been chassed by ferrel pigs twice. I got lucky both times due to my tree stand in my woods.
When I was littln in boy scouts I was run off by a bear. He thought the garbage he was raiding was going to be taken by my person. He went right back to his garbage and left me alone after 50 yds.
* No not really, they ran from me.*
No bear is afraid of a human.
