What is the best caliber for hunting?

Specifically at medium to long range and for deer/bear sized gameWhat is the best caliber for hunting?
7mm caliber, stable flight, accurate, and you have a variety of calibers to choose from. What is the best caliber for hunting?
For Deer and Coyote the caliber I use and recommend is the .270 winchester. The cartridge design is similar to the 30-06,It flies flat, and carries good power. There are many good rifle calibers available for Deer. For a bear, the bigger the better (within reason). At the minimum, a .300 WSM in one of the higher power loads might be a good choice. Don't take my word for it on the Bear though, I live in Oklahoma and the only Bear I hunt are in my dreams. I am only going from what I have read. However, I do love my Remington 700 .270 winchester and we have plenty of Deer and Coyote here.
i use a 308 Remington. There are many bullet choices for this caliber. From hunting coyotes to hunting moose. at a 1000 meters the 7.62 aka the 308 is 72.8 feet above the target and comes strait down to hit the target, a random fact for you. I am a sniper in the US Army and i swear bye the 7.62 class of rifles. 308 win, 30-06 Springfield, 300 win mag, 300 win short mag. i use the 308 because its accurate and it dont hurt the shoulder either. And it has plenty of energy to humanly take a deer or bear up to 700 meters.
Here in PA we use .270 for bear all the time. Don't listen to the magnum boys. They like to brag more than they like to shoot.

If you had said short to medium range then anything from 30/30 on up would kill both. But for longer ranges you need a .270 or 30-06.

Get a magnum if you like, there are a lot for sale cheap after the holidays. Guys take them to the range once, then sell them.
Wow, Deer and Bear are two different animals. You'd have to go with a heavy 200 grain or more .30-06 round or better for a big bear.

The best all round for medium to small bear and deer would be .308 but the further south you go the smaller the deer get and you might blow one in half with a .308 unless you used a lighter load and lighter bullet.

A 12 Gauge shotgun would take care of either. You'd just have to consider your loads and the distance to engagement. Bears don't always run the other way when shot.

Good Luck!
Deer sized @ long range ? = 30.06 ( Most will say the same )

Bear sized @ long range ? = 300wby Mag or Winchester mag. This is my opinion only of course. Not knowing what kind of bear we are taking about I will assume the standard black bear or brown but the 300 will work well even for grizzly.

You could go with many rounds but for the best of both worlds, I would still pick the 300 Weatherby Mag over all the rest. Now Weatherby offers the Vangard series in regular and sub MOA configurations for less than you would think. Its a fine rifle and an excellent proven caliber.

Let us know what you decide ! Good Luck %26amp; Happy Shooting !
Ask 10 people your going to get 10 answers.....

Instead of giving you a list of caliber's consider this....

Only buy a rifle chambered in a common caliber -- Nothing odd, nothing unusual, nothing hard to find, nothing weird or esoteric....

Just common ammunition thats available on every sport shop shelf in North America......

The 30-06 comes to mind... Its a little big for deer (in my opinion) but does have huge legions of fans that do prefer it for deer...... 30-06 is ok for bears to 450 / 500 pounds....

Look here for some insight and opinions....

If you really compare ballistics of ammunition you will find that the .257 weatherby is arguable the most accurate hunting cartridge available on the market. fantastic round for deer a little light for black bear but will still preform just fine
30-06 springfield, .308 winchester, 270 winchester, 270 WSM, 7mm WSM, 300 WSM, 325 WSM, 7.62x54mm nagant, .303 british, and many more, there isn't only one.
Disregard what the other guy said. A 50 cal can go through 5 rounds of kevlar A.K.A bullet proof vest. I would suggest 30-06 it has enough punching power along with accuracy needed at long ranges. Hope this helped and happy hunting.
G'day mte 308, 3006.7mm,7mm08 try those guns but i would rather the 308 over the 30 06 and the 7mm over all of them 7mmo8 is also a good gun.cheers mate
You need way more than a .270. Use a 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Wby Mag or 300 Win Mag or 338 Win Mag. All of those will take a bear out with one hit.
depends...we hunt ships with small ballistic missles

Critters... at least 10 favorite or perfect calibers for every hunted beast on earth.

i am emotionally invested in this opinion and refuse to budge
50 cal. man blow a watermelon sized hole in it!
