many brands not sure , at least a 12 gauge if duck hunting get a longer barrel or one that can have interchangeable barrels , some say one chambered for a 3 1/2 inch shell is only necessary for Turkey Hunting ( gots to penetrate thems Turkey's big breasts meat to reach vital organs ) and usually need a Turkey choke , if planning to use slugs/sabots might also get an additional barrel with it with a rifled bore , some say pump more reliabe ( more inexpensive ) and no jamming worries ( say why military and police use pump for close combat ) , i admit i have pump shotguns ( but darnit i wanted semi-auto , were expensive at time , but now a few years later some foreign made semi-autos in the $200-300 range ) , the double barrel and single shot etc. are more for skeet and trap shooting since lighter and easier to maneuver , but when got bear coming or rabid possum LOL you'll want more shots than 2 : ) ( or one )
shotguns good for mainly close range and in brushy areas , and fowl hunting , deer etc. better off with rifle ( shotgun slugs and sabots still don't travel that far ) , i gotta 30-06 semi-auto for dear , lucky got at clearance price (haven't shot yet display model last one , may have a bent barrel lol) , and can't find semi-auto 30-06's at local sporting goods stores anymore , knew one guy in my area had to get his semi-auto 30-06 much more expensive at gun show ( me's don't like bolt-action , i need more than one shot sometimes , and don't like having to track down wounded game , and actually wished i could get a full auto instead of a semi-auto when sometimes i don't gotta good shot LOL )
and unless ya going for really big game or Bull Elephants ya probably wouldn't need a 10 gauge and shells would be hard to find LOLWhats a good shotgun to use for hunting?
I own a Remington 870 in 12 gauge and use it not only for hunting but trap and skeet shooting. With the varity of choke tubes that come with the gun its a great all around gun to own. The mechanics of the gun are simple and the reliability is great. Most of the guns I own are Remington and I've never had a problem with any of them and that covers from 22 caliber, 30-06, 20 gauge and 12 gauge.
How much do you want to spend? What kind of hunting are you planning on doing? Don't just buy a gun. Go to a large store and try them on. See how they feel. Talk to the people behind the counter on what types of shotguns are best for the type of hunting that you want to do. A Remington 870 is a good shotgun. But you may not like the feel of it. So go to the store and put it on your shoulder. Make sure it fits you properly and understand how it works. I would recommend a 12 gauge shotgun that would accept screw on chokes so you can change the choke for the type of hunting that you plan on doing. As for the brand, that is up to you and how much you want to spend. But don't forget to see how it feels first. Good luck.
Rem 870
Mossberg 500
Benelli Nova
Rem 11-87
Beretta Ulrika
dozens of others out there are ok to very good be they pump, auto-loader or double barrels
--- I forgot one thing.... It needs to fit you so that when you bring it to your shoulder it should naturally be positioned so that your eye looks right along the top of the barrel not down onto it or up at an angle where you don't see any of the barrel because it's blocked by the back of the receiver.
least expensive and most versatile over all are the Rem 870 and Moss 500 lines.
One thing to consider would be how much time you'll be carrying the gun. If your out all day take a look at an ultra light model from Beretta.
If your only out for an hour an over and under sporter.
In my honest opinion you cannot go far wrong with the Beretta 686 or 687 series guns.
get a double barrel, use the tight barrel for the distant shots and the open one for the close ones
a double barrel shotgun is the best hunting shotgun, not only does it give you an instant choice of choke but also shot size
Remington 870, Mossberg 500, Mossberg Maverick, Winchester 1300, Savage 67,69
Not a dimes worth of difference between them except for price
regardless what the diehards say the Rem 870, and the Mossberg 500 are inter changable. I have both, their both great guns!
Get a double Barrel shotgun
winchester speed pump,,, new make of 1300
you should get either a 243 or a 30-06 they are reliable guns.
12 gauge
i have a 16 gauge but ther hard to find but 12gauge is the best i think (D O N O T get a double barrell)
