Well, you can technically hunt duck with a rifle, if you want to do poorly. Rumor has it that during the testing of the Delisle carbine, generals who were inspecting it did shoot a duck in the neck from 300m. The joke was that he called it a terrible rifle, as he was aiming for the head. I've seen people shooting clays with an AR, so there's no reason, with enough practice, you could employ a single projectile against ducks.
For home defense, though, nothing can reasonably compare to a shotgun. A rifle, usually, will go in and out, sometimes not leaving a fatal wound at all. The criminal will still be on his feet in most cases. A shotgun loaded with large birdshot, or small buckshot, should destroy a large portion of the perpetrator. It's not likely he'd survive. There have been cases where criminals get shot in the head with a 12 gauge and cannot be identified, other than fingerprints. A Mossberg 500 is one of the best home defense shotguns, I believe. If you're not the type to yell at someone in your house illegally, the noise pumping a live shell into the chamber should get your point across. Mossbergs are a little louder than the Remingtons if pumped fast, but mine pumps easier than any 870 I've shot. I believe this is due to the fact that the Mossberg uses a lighter alloy receiver. The 500 is also more reliable, as the dual claw extractors grab both sides of the shell, and throw it harder than an 870 during a slow or short pump.
For a target rifle, a shotgun isn't such a good choice, unless you're shooting at objects instead of paper. A shotgun and some Fiocchi nickel plated buckshot is excelent for use against printers, laptops, hard drives, desktops, old furnature, rusty grills, foam deer, drywall, and many other things. I have an AR-15 that's fairly accurate, and groups on a quarter at 100m, but I have a Savage 10FP that I can't even shoot to it's fullest potential. Dollar for dollar, a Savage 10FP in .223 or .308 is a more accurate platform than a Remington 700 or any of it's variants. I use 68 grain Black Hills in the AR, and 69 Sierra Match Kings in the Savage. What is a good, cheap rifle that is USA-made, for target shootin', duck hunting and possibly home defense?
Are you related to Billy Fred Clinton?
He is the only 'hunter' I know of that claims to hunt ducks with a rifle.
Well anyway, he is the only 'hunter' I know of that CLAIMS to hunt ducks with a rifle and THINKS it's Legal...What is a good, cheap rifle that is USA-made, for target shootin', duck hunting and possibly home defense?
Isn't that what Slick Willy said one year? I'm gonna take my rifle and go duck hunting!
Duh! One doesn't hunt duck with a rifle. A 12 gauge shotgun works better for both duck and home defense. The 870 Remington pump is a great choice.
Good luck.
H
The Ruger 10/22. It is a semi auto rifle which can be fired as fast as your manial dexterity will allow, and real accurate.
Rifle? For ducks????? Uh, ....... you're a far better shot than almost anyone else I know if you can take ducks with a rifle. Everyone that I know has to use a shotgun. Also, rifles are not your best choice for home defense for two reasons. First, a rifle slug is prone to over penetration and can go through a wall and hit a neighbor or innocent bystander. Not a good thing. Secondly, it is awkward to handle within the confines of a house. I'm afraid that you will need at least three guns to properly do what you want to do. For a rifle, I would recommend a Savage. It is very accurate, well made and very reasonably priced. For ducks, I wold recommend a 12 ga. Mossburg 500. It, too, is a well made and reasonably priced gun. My recommendation for home defense is a Taurus ';The Judge';. It will fire both .410 shotshells and .45 long Colt cartridges. As a home defense gun, I'd load all cylinders with .410 shotshells with the biggest shot that you can get. It will absolutely ruin a bad guy's day. A handgun is much more easily manuvered inside a house than a rifle or shotgun would be. Their long barrels make them very awkward inside a house.
You can probably find a Savage rifle and a Mossburg shotgun in the used gun section of your local gun store. Avoid pawn shops and buying from individuals unless you absolutely know what you are doing when selecting a good used gun. The Taurus has not been out long enough for there likely to be any used ones available.
Jeff H is correct, you cannot use a rifle for duck, you use a rifle for deer and a shot gun for birds, duck and others... you can use any for home defense... a shotgun is better for home defense.... since it has a wide pattern when it fires....
Remington 870 is the best bet for your buck. 12 or 20 gauge it doesn't matter. Plus you can get aftermarket attachments for it so it can have a pistol grip, fold down stock and many other variations too. Its a pretty simple design. Probably why it is the most reliable for the money you spend. Mossbergs are alright but all of my friends seem to think they are garbage when I'm bagging more ducks than them with my 870.
Mossberg 12 guage it aint a rifle cause unless you are the worlds best shot you aint hunting ducks w/a rifle but a good shotgun works well for bird hunting and is really good for in you home defense
I would have to agree with other posters about getting a Remington 870 in 12 or 20 gauge. I been shooting them for years and never seen any malfunctions of any sort. The mossberg may be cheaper but I dont know very many people that own one and the ones that do would go right back to a Remington.
At my local gunshop they have used shotguns that can be slightly cheaper than buying a brand new shotgun. Last I heard Remington offers a $30 rebate when you buy a new one along with some on ammo too.
Anyway have fun looking around for a good deal and more fun enjoying your purchase.
No such gun exists. You can't use a rifle for duck hunting.
All those who say you can't hunt ducks with a rifle...

Hello,,for obvious reasons I suggest you purchase a Model 500 Mossberg 20 guage youth model. If you think you'll try deer hunting someday, get the combo package w/slug barrel
Get a Remington 870 12 gauge. SO much better quality than Mossberg. In fact, the Mossberg 500 was just a cheap copy of the Rem 870. Anyways the MOssberg 500 will go for about $200 at WalMart. And the Remington 870 will go for about $300. Trust me, spend the extra $100 and get something that will last.
