Is the Nikon ProStaff 550 or the Nikon 440 rangefinder a better choice for deer hunting (either in Mississippi or South Texas)Which rangefinder is the best for deer hunting?
i would rather take a LEICA. any like is beter than most other products....Which rangefinder is the best for deer hunting?
I had never used a rangefinder until last year. I was on a new lease and did not want to mess up my chances of coming back by blowing a shot so I bought the best binoculars I could find(already have a great scope) and I broke down and bought a ';cheapo'; Bushnell rangefinder. I can't remember the model number, but it was the least expensive in the lineup. It worked wonderfully. Every yardage it gave out to 440 yards was verified with my friend's more expensive model. He was so impressed by it that he bought one for his dad. They go for about $150.
Good Luck and Good Hunting!
I think for any Optics or Rangefinders Leupold is the only way to go. They are American made and everything they make has a lifetime warranty. You can certainly spend more money on other brands, but for the money nothing is better than Leupold.
I would get the 550-it has greater effective range. Remember, 550 is the maximum range of this unit under ideal conditions with maximum contrast (like a white Suburban in a black parking lot). Under less than ideal conditions (like a brown deer in brown cover) your effective range will be much less. If you really want 440 or 550 yards effective range under field conditions, you might want an 800 yard unit or better.
Leica 1200 LFR
It isn't cheep but it will range well on game animals much farther than others. On days with good light conditions 900 yards is no problem. It also has a red display that can be read easliy against dark backgrounds (its the only brand that has that feature). It also has one of the narrowest beams so you can get hits on what you are ranging with out all the false readings (tree limbs, weeds, etc) that others fail on. And last the optics are some of the best (clearest) you will find.
